I did enjoy romantic subplots back in the time. For me, it added another layer to the "everyone is special in their own way", but Donna was a relief. I mean, I loved Martha, but I felt like she wasn't treated right. She deserved so much more, but she a)showed up after Rose so everyone hated her and b)her love for the doctor blinded her. And her ending didn't make so much sense to me. Like, "she's black, and Mickey is also black. They're perfect". Because they didn't have too much time on screen together, we wouldn't know they were a good couple.
Donna was simply great. She was a character people could actually relate to, and didn't fit the Manic Pixie Dream Girl every companion have to fit at some point. Her sassiness was perfectly built, and her relationship with the doctor was new and fresh (compared to other relationships on New Who). And the way they refused to be together was also well done, since they didn't need to tell each other how much they weren't physically attracted all the time. For me, Donna's ending was even cruel. She had learnt that she was important, but suddenly it was gone. She didn't deserve that. Nobody deserve that.
For what I've noticed from interviews, I feel like the Doctor says what Moffat thinks. So that's where all the sexism may come from. And since the guy thinks all the female fans of Doctor Who are there because they want to fuck the doctor (because that's what all women want, a guy who change, then marry and have them on a leash until they die), he's more than proud to shame women and their life choices (even when those life choices are the ones he gave to them).
Sadly I'm not on Classic Who, but I'm looking forward to watch some episodes.
